Affirming the Common Good in a Secular Society

The myth of the “Judaic/Christian Heritage” slowly fades away as the reality of democracy as an Inclusive, yet diverse system is more apparent in truth.  Christians should not be surprised – but we are, for we prefer the myth and the “exceptionalism” that undergirds it.

Believers from the beginning have been instructed in the contrast of the kingdoms.  We are citizens of both a political and a spiritual realm. The challenge is: which has claim on our souls?  It is that “Two Masters* warning of Jesus.  As Americans and as Christians, how do we define, comprehend, and interpret a set of virtues which undergird both “who” and “whose” we are?
